They say they are doing the work of permanent staff, but going home with Sh17,000 a month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark Wambua has taught maths for 18 months. He reports at 7am, handles a full timetable, and says the pay cannot sustain a family in Nairobi.  &#8220;We are on the street because we cannot accept this level of impunity,&#8221; he said during a May 5 protest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Learning Disrupted, Parents Stuck<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The standoff now threatens Term 2. In Kilifi, 1,300 JSS teachers have threatened to down tools. In Nairobi and other counties, thousands of interns have stayed away for over 2 weeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Schools are struggling to deliver CBC core subjects. Parents are paying fees with no teacher in class.  &#8220;My Grade 7 son has had no science teacher for 3 weeks. KCSE and KPSEA are not waiting,&#8221; said one Nairobi mother.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A 2025 court ruling declared it illegal to keep qualified teachers as interns. Yet TSC has not confirmed them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unions led by KJSEA\u2019s Nehemiah Kipkorir and KUPPET\u2019s Akello Misori are also pushing for mass promotions for 135,000 teachers who have stagnated up to 30 years, and full implementation of the 2025-2029 CBA by July 2027.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"TSC dismisses KUPPET&amp;apos;s claims that it has failed to address teachers&amp;apos; concerns\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/b9R-nEV-RRw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-post-featured-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"629\" height=\"311\" src=\"https:\/\/blazepointmedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Screenshot_20260806-230957_1.jpg\" class=\"attachment-post-thumbnail size-post-thumbnail wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" style=\"object-fit:cover;\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blazepointmedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Screenshot_20260806-230957_1.jpg 629w, https:\/\/blazepointmedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Screenshot_20260806-230957_1-300x148.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 629px) 100vw, 629px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The Health Front: SHA Woes<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pay is only half the fight. In December 2025, TSC moved 400,000 teachers to SHA under &#8220;Mwalimu Cover&#8221;. Three months later, unions say it has collapsed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">KUPPET reports at least 14 teachers have been detained in hospitals over unpaid bills. Alex Ngari of Ofafa Jericho Junior School is detained at Aga Khan over a Sh2.5 million bill despite being cleared for discharge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Teachers cite outpatient caps of Sh1,200-Sh2,500 that barely cover consultation. Many are forced to top up or resort to &#8220;miti shamba&#8221;. In Murang\u2019a, hospitals have suspended services over unpaid government bills.  &#8220;SHA is NOT working,&#8221; one teacher said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In North Eastern, the crisis is worse. Non-local teachers are seeking transfers after Al-Shabaab killed colleague Stephen Musili in Garissa in January.  &#8220;I love teaching, but I can\u2019t do it anymore,&#8221; said Agnes Kavata, who survived the attack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Government Response<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">TSC and the Ministry of Health insist the cover is comprehensive \u2014 Sh1-3 million inpatient and Sh450,000 outpatient across 6,000 facilities. Health CS Aden Duale said the shift is about &#8220;discipline in how public funds are used&#8221;.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">TSC has also allocated Sh422.6 billion for 2026\/27 and says confirmation of interns is in process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But unions disagree. KUPPET and KNUT have issued a 7-day notice to SHA and threatened a nationwide strike and boycott if caps are not restored.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What\u2019s at Stake<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With 18 months to 2027 elections, JSS \u2014 the face of CBC \u2014 has become a political flashpoint.
