Chess Kenya confirmed the news on Wednesday, calling it a devastating loss for the sport.

Hawi picked up chess at age 9 in a school club and quickly rose through the ranks. By his teens he was winning national junior titles and earning praise for his discipline and tactical depth. Officials described him as one of Kenya’s most promising young talents.

Chess Star:Hawi Kaloki

“Hawi was humble, hungry to learn, and believed Kenya could compete with the best in the world,” said the Chess Kenya President. “To lose him at 19 is a tragedy for every young player who looked up to him.”

Teammates remember him as the first to arrive at training and the last to leave. Brian Otieno, National Team Coach, said Hawi would spend hours analyzing lost games. “He wasn’t playing for himself. He was playing for Kenya,” Otieno said.

Hawi was humble, hungry to learn, and believed Kenya could compete with the best in the world
Andrew owili

Junior players also felt his impact. Mercy Wanjiru, 16, said Hawi mentored her at a camp last year. “Alinifundisha jinsi ya kutuliza akili wakati wa mashindano. The game is expanding in schools, but young players still face limited funding, few international opportunities, and little media coverage compared to other sports.

This is about more than a missed tournament. It’s about a 19-year-old who turned 64 squares into hope for a nation. Hawi made his last move, but his story is now a call to support the next generation.

In his honor, Chess Kenya announced a minute of silence at all tournaments this month and plans for the Hawi Kaloki Memorial Tournament in 2026 to support junior players. “We cannot bring Hawi back,” the Federation said. “But we can make sure his name inspires another Kenyan child to play.”

Hawi Kaloki, 19, a Kenyan national chess champion who had represented the country internationally, has died weeks before he was…

[4

post-228","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-latest-news
["GET
