NAIROBI, Kenya \u2014 The High Court has set September 16, 2026, for the sentencing of former Migori Governor Okoth Obado and two co-convicts following their conviction over the murder of Rongo University student Sharon Otieno.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Justice Cecilia Githua directed that Obado, his former personal assistant Michael Juma Oyamo and former Migori County clerk Caspal Ojwang\u2019 Obiero appear before the court for sentencing after they were found guilty of murder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The three were convicted on July 23, 2026, after the court found that the prosecution had proved its case beyond reasonable doubt. The judge said the evidence established a complete chain linking the three to Sharon\u2019s killing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The court has since received a pre-sentence social inquiry report and a victim impact report detailing the effect of Sharon\u2019s murder on her family. The prosecution and defence teams have also been directed to file their respective submissions before the sentencing hearing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Obado has asked the court to consider a lenient, including non-custodial, sentence. In a pre-sentence report, the former governor cited his age, health condition and the lengthy period taken to conclude the case as factors that should be considered. He maintained that he did not participate in Sharon\u2019s murder but said he respected the court\u2019s verdict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sharon Otieno was abducted and killed in September 2018 while she was 26 years old and pregnant. Her murder triggered a lengthy trial that lasted nearly eight years and attracted significant national attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The three convicts remain in custody after the court cancelled their bonds following their conviction. They will return to the High Court on September 16 for the sentencing hearing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
