President William Ruto has led Kenya and the region in mourning the death of Hafidh Ameir Hassan, husband to Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan, who died on Monday morning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hafidh, Tanzania’s first-ever First Gentleman, died at around 8:00 AM on Monday, September 7, 2026, at the Emilio Mzena Memorial Hospital in Zanzibar, where he had been receiving treatment for a heart condition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His death was officially announced by Tanzania’s Vice President Deogratius Ndejembi in a live televised address.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“It is with great sadness that I inform you of the death of Honourable Hafidh Ameir Hassan, husband of the President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Honourable Dr Samia Suluhu Hassan,” Ndejembi said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Quiet Man Behind a Historic Presidency<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mwalimu Hafidh Ameir, aged between 70 and 72, was an agriculturalist, academic and retired agricultural officer who deliberately kept a low public profile throughout his wife’s political rise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He married Samia in 1978, long before she entered national politics, and the couple shared nearly five decades of marriage. They had four children \u2014 three sons and a daughter, Wanu Hafidh Ameir, who is now a politician serving in the Zanzibar House of Representatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite his wife making history in March 2021 as Tanzania’s first female President following the death of John Magufuli, Hafidh rarely appeared at State events, preferring life away from the spotlight in Zanzibar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Funeral arrangements are already underway in Kizimkazi, Zanzibar, his ancestral home, where he will be laid to rest according to Islamic rites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ruto: Kenya Stands With Tanzania<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

President William Ruto was among the first regional leaders to send condolences, posting a heartfelt message on X and Facebook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I have received with deep sorrow the news of the passing of Hafidh Ameir Hassan,” Ruto said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“On behalf of the Government and people of Kenya, the First Lady, my family and on my own behalf, I convey our heartfelt condolences to President Samia, her family and the people of Tanzania. President Samia has lost a lifelong companion, her children a beloved father, and Tanzania a distinguished son.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Kenya stands with our Tanzanian brothers and sisters in this moment of grief. May Almighty God comfort President Samia and her family, give them strength through this difficult time, and grant Hafidh Ameir Hassan eternal rest,”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other regional leaders also sent tributes. Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema said he and his country “stand side by side” with Tanzania’s first family, while Burundian President Evariste Ndayishimiye prayed for comfort and strength for President Samia. The Africa CDC also sent condolences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By press time, President Samia herself had not yet issued a personal statement, with Tanzanians already taking to social media to share rare videos of the couple embracing \u2014 a poignant reminder of a private love that supported a public presidency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
