The earlier application was rejected over what the ORPP cited as “similarities with existing political party names and slogans, as well as public interest concerns.”

With 18 months to the 2027 General Election, the name dispute has quickly become about more than paperwork. It is about who gets to frame the conversation around citizens, cost of living, and accountability on the ballot.

The meeting and what’s at stakeAccording to officials present, the movement’s legal team presented new submissions to address the Registrar’s concerns, including proposals for alternative name formats and evidence that no current party directly uses “Linda Mwananchi.”

The Registrar did not issue a final ruling but agreed to re-evaluate the application. A decision is expected within 14 days. If rejected again, the movement says it will appeal to the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal.

“We are not asking for permission to exist. We are asking for space to serve,” one of the conveners said after the meeting. “They rejected us for ‘public interest’. Whose public? Whose interest? The people we are trying to ‘linda’ are the same ones being left out of 2027 conversations.”

Why the name matters for 2027The ORPP is mandated under the Political Parties Act to prevent misleading or duplicate party names. Since January 2025, at least 12 name applications have been rejected on similar grounds.

But analysts say Linda Mwananchi — Swahili for “Protect the Citizen” — carries strong campaign weight heading into 2027. The movement, which began with town halls on taxation, police conduct and service delivery, has in the last 6 months held rallies in 8 counties.

“2027 is about who speaks for the hustler, the mama mboga, the boda guy. That is us,” another leader said. “If the name is the only thing blocking us from the ballot, then we will fight for the name.”

Political strategists note that party registration deadlines will tighten by mid-2026. A name approved now means access to funding, visibility, and a spot on the ballot later. A rejection forces the group to rebrand months before campaigns begin.

The bigger pictureLinda Mwananchi is positioning itself outside the traditional UDA-ODM formations, targeting youth and working-class voters frustrated by economic pressure.

The Registrar’s office has not commented publicly beyond confirming the consultative meeting took place.

For now, the movement is banking on public attention to sway the outcome.

“John Cox knows Kenyans are watching,” a senior official said. “You cannot tell wananchi you are protecting them, then reject the party named to do exactly that.”

Leaders of the Linda Mwananchi movement say they are optimistic the Registrar of Political Parties, John Cox Lorionokou, will reverse…

[3

post-65","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-politics
["GET
