A mother from Tana River travelled 200km to Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital on Wednesday. She was turned away. “No nurses,” she was told. She left for a private facility she cannot afford. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her story is repeating across Kenya after the Kenya National Union of Nurses and Midwives KNUNM launched a nationwide strike at midnight on July 28. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Standoff<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the heart of the strike are 6 years of unfulfilled promises. Nurses are demanding the conclusion of the 2025-2029 CBA, promotions, conversion to permanent and pensionable terms, and remittance of statutory deductions. They also want full implementation of the 2017 Return-to-Work Formula and PSC career guidelines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Mombasa, branch chairman Erick Otieno accused the county of ignoring these issues. In Kericho, nurses protested delays in implementing the 2017 CBA. In Uasin Gishu, over 2,200 nurses across 138 facilities downed tools over a CBA agreed in principle but never signed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Job insecurity is driving the anger. Health unions warn that UHC and Global Fund workers are being kept on Sh8.9 billion conditional grants instead of permanent payroll. “These health workers are not conditional grants,” said KNUN SG Seth Panyako.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Counties have responded with stop-gap measures. Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir announced recruitment of 573 nurses on contract. But unions say contract hiring does not fix structural problems and have vowed not to return until demands are met.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Human Cost<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n

The strike, now in week 2, is cracking the health system. At Murang\u2019a Level Five, maternity, HDU and emergency wards are being run by medical interns, community health volunteers and records interns. At Coast General, new admissions were suspended while outpatient services were overwhelmed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Rift Valley, public services in three counties were paralysed. In Siaya, most public facilities shut down, leaving chronic patients without care. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Marsabit, the impact is severe. Inpatient admissions dropped 91% and theatre services halted due to lack of anaesthetists. Unions estimate over 15,000 patients are turned away monthly, nearly 700 denied admission, and 133 surgeries not done. “This is not just a strike. This is a humanitarian crisis,” said KUCO chair Peterson Wachira.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Patients bear the brunt. At KNH in April, Esther Ann from Gatundu was turned away twice while seeking treatment for failing vision. Mary Chelimo travelled from Nakuru for her daughter\u2019s post-brain surgery stitches but was sent back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why This Matters<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is Kenya\u2019s third major health workers\u2019 standoff in 2026. The cycle is familiar: strike, MoU, partial implementation, new strike. Doctors and pharmacists in Kericho had just signed an MoU 3 days before nurses walked out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With UHC staffing set to transition from national to county payroll next month, unions fear more insecurity as the budget treats them as “conditional” not recurrent. For now, hospitals operate on skeleton staff and Kenyans without money for private care are waiting. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is no return-to-work date as of August 6.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
