Eight people died at the scene in Mwea East, Kirinyaga County after a tuk-tuk was hit head-on by a speeding parcel truck this week, police and witnesses said.
The crash occurred along a busy road in the sub-county when, according to residents Bishop Carson and John Muriuki, the oncoming truck veered into the tuk-tukβs lane and struck it directly.
Mwea East Sub-County Police Commander Stephen Okal confirmed the incident saying all eight occupants of the tuk-tuk were killed instantly and their bodies moved to a nearby mortuary.
“The truck was moving at a very high speed. The tuk-tuk had no chance,” John Muriuki said at the scene.
Bishop Carson called for urgent action to tame reckless driving in the area, saying such accidents have become too common.
