Popular Mugithi musician Samuel Muchoki Ndirangu, known as Samidoh, has formally offered his candidature for Member of Parliament for Ol Joro Orok Constituency in Nyandarua County ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The announcement marks a decisive shift for the singer, who rose to national prominence through Mugithi music and previously served as an Administration Police officer.
DCP Ticket and Political Alignment
Samidoh revealed he intends to vie on the ticket of the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), a political outfit associated with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. DCP was established in 2025 and has positioned itself as youth-focused, seeking to field candidates across elective seats nationwide.
The musician has already been active in DCP campaigns. He was among key campaigners for DCP’s Ol Kalou candidate, Sammy Kamau, who won the seat.
From Stage to Ballot
Ol Joro Orok, one of five constituencies in Nyandarua County, has an estimated population of over 90,000 residents.
Samidoh’s entry adds him to a growing list of Kenyan entertainers transitioning into elective politics. He had earlier hinted at the move through social media, using hashtags such as “#Oljoro_Orok001” and urging voter registration under “#TukoKadi”.
“Democracy works when you show up. One registration today, a lifetime of impact tomorrow. Niko kadi je wewe? Oljoroorok001,” he posted.
The singer has been laying groundwork in the area for years through charity initiatives under “Guitar ya Samidoh,” targeting less fortunate residents. In 2023, he and Edday Nderitu distributed food aid to families affected by wildlife invasions in Nyandarua.
Background and Recent Controversies
Born in Subukia, Nakuru County, Samidoh later relocated to Ol Joro Orok in Nyandarua. Before music, he worked as an Administration Police officer.
His police career has been turbulent. In 2025, the National Police Service declared him a deserter for failing to report to the Anti-Stock Theft Unit in Gilgil since May 27, 2025, and ordered his salary stopped. He was reportedly transferred after participating in anti-government chants.
Despite earlier speculation, Samidoh in August told a court he had “no immediate plans to vie”. His latest declaration, however, confirms he is now in the race.
Public and Political Reaction
Reactions have been mixed. Some supporters have rallied behind the bid, citing his popularity and community ties. Others questioned whether celebrity status translates to legislative capability.
Nominated Senator Karen Nyamu, the mother of two of Samidoh’s children, said she wishes him well. “We share children. Who wouldn’t want the best for the father of their babies? Only witches,” she posted.
Analysts note his bid could shake up the political landscape in Ol Joro Orok as aspirants begin positioning for 2027.
With voter mobilisation already underway, Samidoh’s move signals early political alignments in Nyandarua and the wider Mt. Kenya region ahead of the next polls.
